View of Saint-Mammès
(18th and 19th Centuries )
This is one of nearly fifty views that Sisley painted around Saint-Mammès where the Canal du Loing meets the River Seine about forty miles southeast of Paris. The canal was part of a network of waterways constructed in the 18th century to link the cities of Lyon and Paris -- part of an earlier phase of the industrialization of France, that began to be eclipsed by the railways around the time Sisley was painting. In this work the artist uses rough brushstrokes and vibrant colors to suggest light bouncing off the river and filtering though the grasses at the water’s edge. Although a painting like this might take a long time to produce and require much preparation, the overall effect is that Sisley has spontaneously captured the view in front of him.
