Christ Healing a Blind Beggar
Christ's miracles of healing were essential to his ministry. Curing a blind man, for example the beggar Bartimaeus sitting by the road outside of Jericho (Gospel of Mark), demonstrated to the faithful that Christ was empowered by the Holy Spirit. Christ declared that the beggar had healed himself by his faith, through which all things were possible.
The setting was brushed in by Joos de Momper, a landscapist with whom Francken often collaborated. The striated brushstrokes create an effect similar to painting on veined stone, an approach in which the slices of stone with patterns suggestive of a landscape were used for small cabinet paintings.
