Provenance
Provenance (from the French provenir, 'to come from/forth') is the chronology of the ownership, custody, or location of a historical object.
Heraldic frontispiece on fol. 1 and style of c. 1580 suggest that the picture-album may have been made at the time of the acccession of Charles Emanuel I, duke of Nemours and Savoy, 1580-1630. He and his father Emanuel Philibert (1553-80) were the only dukes of Savoy whose coats of arms match those on f. 1; obtained by Henry Walters from Leon Gruel
