Seated Buddha in "Maravijaya"

Thai (Sculptor)
14th-15th century (Ayutthaya)
leaded bronze, traces of gilding
(Southeast Asia )

This image can be assumed to have been cast in Ayutthaya itself. It epitomizes the Early Ayutthaya classic style. This image shares the pedestal type and various technical qualities, but it stands somewhat apart from others in the style. The waist is high, and the torso appears stretched out. The modeling of the moutgh conveys a particular expression. The brows are in relief, following the U Thong manner, but turned into planar sockets following the lead of Sukhothai.
