Fragmentary Head of Bodhisattva
(Southeast Asia )
This bodhisattva’s abundant curly hair piled high and the prominent mustache are characteristic of Gandhara. These also probably characterized the idealized beauty of some of the region’s culturally diverse population. The jewelry of Gandharan bodhisattvas often exhibits imagery of fantastic creatures. The earrings on this one are in the form of winged lions, mythical beasts also represented in Greek and Roman art and other cultures that incorporated elements of Greco-Roman traditions.
