Sphinx Vase Ornament
(Ancient Greece )
Locri Epizephyrii (present-day Gerace, Italy), a particularly active bronze-working center, specialized in richly ornamental attachments for vessels and utensils. This vase attachment is in the form of a sphinx, a mythical creature with the body of a lion, wings of a bird, and head of a woman. She wears a high "polos", or ritual crown.
