Amphora Depicting a Youth with Petasos and Woman and an Athlete

Ethiop Painter (Greek, active ca. 480-450 BCE) (?) (Artist)
ca. 460-450 BCE (Classical)
terracotta
(Ancient Greece )

This amphora depicts a youth (possibly Theseus) pursuing a woman on the front. He wears a chlamys and a petasos with a striped scabbard at his side. Running right, he holds two spears in his left hand, the upper parts of which rest on his shoulder; he reaches out with his right towards the woman he pursues. She runs right, looking round, both hands bent at her waist holding a ribbon. She wears a chiton and a short cloak which is draped over her left shoulder, around her back and waist, and over her left arm. Her hair is tied up in back and held in place by a taenia.

On the back is a mantled youth. Wreathed, he stands right, gesturing with his extended right hand and holding a staff in his left at waist level.

Inscription

[Inscription] On front between figures: NKOΣ; [Inscription] To the right of the woman's head: K
