Cleaner for Flash Pan and Lock from the Gun Set of Mahmud I
(Islamic World )
This is part of the so-called "Turkish Hunting Set" consisting of the Ottoman gun (Walters 51.84) and various accessories contained within a large Parisian case (Walters 64.165).
The head of the cleaner is silver and set with diamonds. There is a small pin at one side of the head which is designed to fit inside the diamond set bezel at right of the breech of the gun (51.84).The screw shank of the cleaner is engraved with a spiral and the shaft is also engraved and drilled with irregular patterns. There may have been a small tassel or pull ribbon connected through a hole in the head of the cleaner. This object would have been used to clean the flash-pan and the lock of the Ottoman gun (Walters 51.84).
