Kogai with Hollyhock Crests
(Japanese Military Armor)
The kogai is decorated with three hollyhock crests ("aoi mon") on a background of fish egg pattern ("nanako-ji"). The hollyhock crest was used the by the Tokugawa family who ruled Japan between 1615 and 1867. The kogai and its matching kozuka may have been given as a gift by a Tokugawa family member. This is part of a mounted set.
