Icon of the Protection of the Mother of God
(Byzantium and Early Russia)
This bronze icon is in a composition known as the "Protecting Veil of the Virgin" (cf. Walters 44.372, 37.1182). Above are images of the Holy Face, the archangels Gabriel and Michael, and six-winged cherubim or seraphim.
