Perry, a Boston painter, trained abroad in Düsseldorf and Paris. He resided in Rome between 1856 and 1858 and served as the U.S. Consul in Venice from 1862 to 1866.

Looking across the Grand Canal one sees the cupola of the church of Santa Maria della Salute.
