Two Peasants in an Inn

Circle of Adriaen Brouwer (Flemish, 1605/6-1638) (Painter)
1630-1639 (Baroque)
oil on panel
(Baroque Europe )

Here, as in the Jolly Drinker (Walters 37.2745), attention is paid to the expression of frank emotions. This painting is in the sketch-like manner of Flemish artist Adriaen Brouwer but is not by him. The play of colors and the satisfaction of the man turning from his beer are Brouwer's, but the bodies are too awkward. A brilliant painter, Brouwer died young from the excesses he depicted. His art was appreciated by collectors and had many imitators.
