Kozuka with Ichikawa Danjuro in the Play "Shibaraku"

Description Conservation Provenance Inscription Credit
Description This kozuka depicts Ichikawa Danjûrô as the hero from the short play "Shibaraku" (Wait a Moment). The play is one of the eighteen classics of kabuki and was regularly performed by successive actors with the name Ichikawa Danjûrô. In the play, the hero calls out "Wait a moment" from backstage and then appears to stop the villains. The hero wears red and white striped paint on his face and his costume exaggerates his size.
