Christ Carrying the Cross
(Baroque Europe )
The procession engulfing Christ carrying his cross to Calvary winds out of the city at the left, into the foreground, and back to Calvary at the far right. The oblong shape suggests that the canvas was painted for a specific place, perhaps a sacristy. Francken included a similar work in some of his paintings of collections.
The miracle of Veronica's veil was a very popular subject in the late Middle Ages and then revived in the 1600s.
Frans Francken the Younger was the most prolific member of a family of successful painters in Antwerp.
