Description Provenance Credit
Description This pillar fragment is carved with various stylized motifs, including star swirls that can be found throughout Western Europe, especially in Italy, at this time. It is identical to a pillar fragment from southern Italy. As it is decorated on all four sides, it was intended to be free-standing, perhaps as part of a portal.
Provenance Owned by Joseph Brummer; Brummer Sale, Joseph Brummer Gallery, New York, June 9 1949, lot 574; purchased by Walters Art Museum, 1949.
Credit Museum purchase, 1949
