  • The Essence of Line: French Drawings from Ingres to Degas. The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore; Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore; Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham; Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma. 2005-2006.
Provenance William T. Walters, Baltimore, via George Lucas, Paris, 1865 (?) [1]; Henry Walters, Baltimore, 1894, by inheritance; Walters Art Museum, 1931, by bequest. [1] The Diaries of George Lucas strongly suggest a date of 1865 for this drawing when he purchased two drawings of prayer from the artist. However, the previous year he had also purchased a work depicting shepard and sheep.
