View of Tivoli

Edoardo Pastina (Italian, active ca. 1850 - 1870) (Artist)
19th century
oil on canvas

This panoramic, sweeping view of countryside, shows the ruins of Hadrian's villa at Tivoli in the distance. In the foreground are rocky cliffs with low-growing trees. A river rushes down the hillside into the valley. There is a large waterfall in the foreground and several smaller ones cascading down the hillside in the background. The sky is a light blue with a rosy glow near the horizon and the middle ground is bathed in a golden color from the rays of the sinking sun. Pastina's romantic landscape communicates the tranquility of the countryside and the majesty of nature over the man-made ruins.
