Watch in Pair Case with Military Trophy

Joseph Martineau the elder (Clockmaker)
Robert Cooper (Other)
1754
Gold, glass, enamel, paper
(18th and 19th Centuries )

This watch was made by Joseph Martineau, Senior, who was active in London between 1744 and 1794. It is likely that it was made for the Spanish market or a Spanish-speaking customer as the Spanish word "DESPERTADOR" is engraved on the back of the inner case. This can be translated to "alarm" or "alarm clock", probably a nod to one of the watch's functions. In addition, a watchpaper, or a paper label, has been retained between the inner and outer cases of the watch. This paper names Robert Cooper, a watch and clock maker in Gibralter. The reverse of the watchpaper is inscribed with the numbers 27 / 3 / 85, possibly indicating that the watch was repaired by Cooper in 1785.

Inscription

[Maker's mark engraved on backplate]: Joseph Martineau Senr. London 2705; [Engraved on case]: DESPERTADOR; [Paper label (watchpaper), printed inscription on obverse]: Robt Cooper / CLOCK / and Watch Maker / IN / Gibraltar;; [Paper label (watchpaper), inscription in ink on reverse, inscribed in three of four quadrants of an "X"]: 27 [or 21?] / 85 / 3
