A mark on this piece claims that it was "made for the hall for the cultivation of virtue," the building at the Summer Palace in which the Daoguang [Tao-kuang] emperor died in 1850.

[Mark] Four-character mark in red enamel: shen te t'ang chih; [Translation] made for the hall for the cultivation of virtue
