Kozuka with Momotaro and a Dog Under a Pine Tree

Tsuchiya Yasuchika (Japanese, 1670-1744) (Artist)
1670-1744 (mid Edo)
shibuichi, gold, silver
(Japanese Military Armor)

Momotarô stands below a pine tree, giving a dumpling to a dog. Momotarô is the central character in a Japanese folk tale. He was born from a peach and adopted by an old couple. When he left their home, the old woman gave him dumplings to take on the road. He gave a dumpling to a dog, who became his companion. Momotarô and the dog, along with a monkey and a pheasant, defeated the chief demon on the island of the demons, and Momotarô returned to the old couple's house with the demon's fortune.
