Provenance (from the French provenir, 'to come from/forth') is the chronology of the ownership, custody, or location of a historical object.
Female owner, ca. 1275-1300; female owner, 14th century (see fols. 139r-139v, second of two prayers); usage altered to Roman, 15th/16th century; member of the Marcilly branch of the Damas family, of château located northwest of Autun, 1587, fol. ev; ownership entry, 1827, fol. fr; library of Mr. Le Chevalier de la Magdeleine Décédé à Chagny, 27 May, 1832 (see fol. f); signature below effaced; Henri-Auguste Brölemann of Lyon, ca. 1800-1850, his bookplate and blue-edged ticket inscribed 'A 38 / nx' on front pastedown, fragmentary ticket inscribed 'B[...]I / A. 38.' at base of spine; Madame Etienne Mallet, H. A. Brölemann's great-granddaughter; her sale, London, Sotheby's, 4 May 1926, lot 43, illus.
