Portable Writing Set (Yatate) with Compass
A yatate is a portable writing set, providing a case for ink, a shaft for a brush, and often a letter opener. Although the dipper shape was the most common yatate style for centuries, there were as many variations in design and decoration as there were craftsmen producing them. This particular yatate is fashioned with a compass, a sundial, and a calendar, all conveniently hidden under the rabbit's head.
