Hangzhou Landscape

Chinese (Artist)
Copy after Sheng Maoye (Chinese, 1594-1640) (Artist)
18th century
ink and color on silk mounted on paper
(China )

Inscribed in the upper right corner of this painting is a line taken from a poem by the 9th-century classical Chinese writer Zhang Hu. From the poem "Keeping the Temple in Hangzhou," the painter of this landscape wrote:

"A long drought in the mountains, no moisture from the overcast clouds"

He follows this with the date "Summer, 5th month, 1610" and the name "Sheng Maoye." This is likely a copy of a work by Sheng Maoye done on the theme of Zhang's poem and may have been painted during the 18th century.

Inscription

[Signature] Spurious signature of Sheng Maoye (1594-1640); [Inscription] 不雨山長潤無雲水自陰庚辰夏五月寫 盛茂燁; [Translation] Upper right corner: A long drought in the mountains, no moisture from the overcast clouds; [Date] Upper right corner: Summer, 5th month, 1610; [Seal] At top
