Obverse: Head of Marcus Agrippa, wearing rostral crown, left; beaded border. Reverse: Neptune standing, frontal, head facing left, draped, dolphin in right hand, trident in left. This coin was issued under the authority of the emperor Gaius Caligula for his maternal grandfather, Marcus Agrippa, who was a general to the emperor Augustus. The rostral crown was awarded for Agrippa’s crucial role in Augustus’ naval victory at Actium in 31 BCE. The crown features a miniature ship’s ram easily confused here for the more typical laurel wreath.
