Portrait of Charles VII of France
1500s (Renaissance)
oil on panel
In the 1500s there was a geat interest among royal and aristocratic faimlies to display portraits of famous men and women of the past, especially ones to which they could claim some connection. Copies of portraits of rulers long dead were therefore in demand. The quality of the painting as a work of art was not as important as the identity of the personage portrayed.
