Tokaido gojusan tsui

Two men frightened by a ghost fall over one another and then laugh hysterically when they realize they are fleeing a kimono drying in the wind. This print illustrates a scene from the comic novel "Footing It along the Tokaido Road" (or "Shank's Mare") by Jippensha Ikku (1765-1831). The main characters are Yaji and Kita, two happy-go-lucky travelers who experience many adventures as they go along the road between Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto.
