Beaker

Description Provenance Credit
Description The neo-Gothic decoration of this vessel is based on designs by Ludwig Foltz (1809-67) for a ceramic piece known as the Mettlach Cathedral Anniversary Beaker of 1845. Beneath the Gothic arches are three groups: Germania, the female personification of Germany, holding a model of the cathedral; a stonemason drinking from a beaker; and the Three Kings following the star to Bethlehem.
Provenance Calvert J. Kahn, Baltimore [date and mode of acquisition unknown]; Walters Art Museum, 1968, by gift.
