Covered Bowl
This fine porcelain covered bowl exemplifies the reach of China’s long-standing ceramics trade with Southeast Asia. It was produced in China for Siam (known today as the Kingdom of Thailand). The bowl is decorated in a Chinese-inspired style known as lai nam thong. Its identifying characteristic is the ample use of gold, or gilding. On this bowl is a traditional Siamese design of half-length celestial beings in a worshipful, “adoring god” position, each flanked by mythical hybrid creatures whose top half is humanlike and bottom half a horse.
