Manuscript Cabinet with Scenes of the Ramakien
This manuscript cabinet is decorated with black laquer and gold leaf (lai rot nam) illustrations of the Ramakien . Cabinets like this one have the important function of holding sacred texts as well as protecting them from dust, dirt, and damage by insects and other pests. This cabinet has shelves inside to store these long, accordion-folded manuscripts. The subject of the Ramakien is Prince Rama’s 14 years of exile and his eventual return to be crowned king. In this story, Rama is a prince, but he is also a major deity of Hinduism and an avatar, or incarnation, of the god Vishnu.
