Dominating the right foreground are a gondola and a moored sailing vessel. Left, in the middle ground, are other craft. The buildings of the Riva degli Schiavoni are visible in the background.
Félix Ziem was active in the Paris Salon in 1849. He was influenced by the Barbizon school and acquired their naturalistic approach.
