Seated Crowned Buddha in "Maravijaya"

Description Provenance Inscription Credit
Description Many elements link this crowned Buddha to the Bàyon style: the gem in the palm, the beading at the edge of the robe, the vocabulary of the pedestal. Technical characteristics suggest a connection with the Phimai tradition. Originally, this image sat on a base and in front of an aureole- either alone or together with two other images, most likely crowned.
Provenance Private collection, Thonburi, Thailand; Alexander B. Griswold, Monkton, April 13, 1951 [presented to the Breezewood Foundation, December 1960, inv. no. 483]; Walters Art Museum, 1992, by bequest.
