The Eight Immortals
(China )
Zhu Wenxin has painted the standard group of eight immortals, all of them people who have lived in historical times and have acquired magical powers. Clockwise from the top, they are Lan Caihe, with a flower basket; Cao Guojiu, with castanets; Han Xiangai, with a flute; He Xian'gu, a woman who lived on mother-of-pearl powder and moonbeams; Li Tieguai, with an iron crutch; Zhongli Quan, with a scepter; Lü Dungbin, with a pill and sword; and, finally, in the center, Zhang Guolao, who holds a bamboo tube.
