Nile Catfish

Egyptian (Artist)
ca. 1850-1750 BC (Middle Kingdom)
gold with silver dorsal fin
(Ancient Egypt and Nubia , Jewelry)

This gold pendant in the shape of a Nile catfish is a simpler version to Walters 57.1072. The hollow body is made of two pieces of sheet gold formed in repoussé. The sheet gold tail and the dorsal fins of silver (of which only one remains) were inserted into the body. The lines of gills and the "hood" behind are softly chased. The ridge around the eye was produced by a punch. The hole in the mouth is presumably for suspension.
