Dagger (tanto) with Blossoming Cherry Trees

Masatsugu (Japanese, Japanese) (Artist)
Egawa Toshimasa I (Japanese, died ca. 1825) (Artist)
Hamano Masayuki (Japanese, d. 1821) (Artist)
Iwamoto Konkan (Japanese, 1744-1801) (Artist)
ca. 16th-early 19th century (Edo period; Meiji period)
Steel, copper alloy (shibuichi), gold-copper alloy (shakudo), gold, silver, lacquer, wood

The dagger (tanto) was designed primarily as a stabbing weapon, but the edge can be used for slashing as well. The dagger was carried by samurai, and sometimes worn in place of the short sword (wakizashi) in a daisho set, especially on the battlefield. This dagger is decorated with a line of blossoming cherry trees, an indication of the spring season, representing the ephemerality of life.
