Description This unusually large tile depicts Ignatius the "God-Bearer" (Theophoros), bishop of the Syrian city of Antioch, who was martyred in Rome under Emperor Trajan (r. 98-117). Dressed in liturgical vestments, the saint holds a Gospel book in his hand. Another tile from the same series survives in the Walters collection and carries an image of Saint Christopher (inv. 48.2086.13).
