Head of a Man with Long, Oval Face

South Arabian (Sculptor)
6th-5th century BCE
calcite-alabaster
(South Arabia)

The barely modeled features and the proportions of the face are characteristic of early portrait heads from Marib. Details were probably painted on. The borders of the eyes are not incised; the upper lids are executed as short ridges. Depressions represent the mouth and a dimple. The heavy face and the strong neck suggest that the subject is male.
