Tsuka with Peonies and Phoenixes
(Japanese Military Armor)
The kashira depicts large blooming peonies with gold details in the center. Both menuki are in the shape of a "hô-ô" bird with a branch of plum blossoms in their beaks. "Hô-ô" are mythical birds often compared to the phoenix in Western mythology. They are a sign of an auspicious ruler. This is part of a mounted set.
