Beaker

Attributed to Pavel Ovchinnikov (Russian, 1830 - 1888) (Artist)
1908-1917
silver gilding, plique-à-jour enamel
(18th and 19th Centuries )

This tapered, cylindrical beaker has a flaring upper rim and a slightly convex base encircled by bands of braided wire. The vessel's walls are divided into six panels, arched above and pointed below. Three of the panels are decorated with floral and leaf motifs in coral pink, white, red and dark blue over a light blue background. On the alternating panels, more abstract and geometric motifs appear in coral, light blue, green and pale blue over a yellow ground. A stylized floral band in coral, light blue, green and pale blue over red runs around the beaker's foot. Rows of flowing floral designs on a white ground decorate the beaker's bottom and top edges. On the base are a stylized blossom with coral pink petals, a green zigzag pattern with violet circles, and an outer row of white circles.
