(China )
Ho I was ethnically a Manchu, like the Kangxi emperor (reigned 1662-1722), to whom the artist presented this fan. His teacher was the great master Wang Yüan-ch'i, upholder of the conservative, or orthodox, tradition. Trained in this style, Ho I adopted it and used it to evoke the atmosphere and appearance of an actual place, much to the pleasure of the emperor.
