Lamentation of Christ
This ivory medallion, carved in open work, is set in a small wooden box with glass inlay in the corners. A second medallion is missing.
The scene shows the lamentation of the dead Christ by his mother Mary, St. John (right) and Joseph of Arimathea. The Virgin holds the left hand of Christ and touches his dead body which is laying on a shroud on the tomb.
Joseph of Arimathea, a wealthy man and disciple of Christ, donated his own prepared tomb for the burial of Christ after the Crucifixion.
