"China Dog" Jubei was the trusted retainer of the famous Edo "otokodate" (chivalrous commoner) Banzui Chobei and was responsible for Chobei's family after his anticipated death at the hands of a vicious nobleman. The robe with skulls and bones was associated with this role.
