Die schöne Sommerzeit des ewigen Lebens, so nach dem trüben Winter dieser Welt angehen wird
(Manuscripts and Rare Books)
This charming and unique book has no known parallel. It is a hybrid object that began as a simple, un-illustrated printed text. Written by a Lutheran pastor, its plainness was intentional, for Protestants were turning away from the perceived excesses of the Catholic Church. It is therefore remarkable that shortly after its printing, this book was richly illuminated with 43 inserted paintings – a singular example of artistic patronage unheard of in Lutheran book art. The imagery vividly illustrates the text, a spiritual treatise comparing the difficulties of life to the cold of winter, and the pleasures of the afterlife to the warmth of summertime. Some paintings symbolize the fragility of life, such as the “Memento Mori” image of a boy blowing bubbles that will pop at any moment, while the sand in an hourglass slips away nearby. But much of the art captures everyday life, with people sledding, gardening, working at trades, and even relaxing at the pub. There are also wonderful depictions of animals like the phoenix, lions, bears, bees, pelicans, and eagles.
