Silver was one of the most desired natural resources in the Americas during the Colonial period. Potosi, located in modern day Bolivia, was one of the world’s most important silver mines during this time and thus became synonymous with America’s promise of riches. Elite individuals in the Americas fashioned several decorative items from this precious metal, including ornate stirrups for horseback riders. At the time, it was fashionable for women to ride horses using a sidesaddle, therefore these dainty stirrups were made as singular items.
