Railing Post Finial
(China )
Railings posts crowned with elaborate stone caps (zhutou) like this one are found on stone platforms with railed terraces that are the bases of traditional Chinese palaces and temples. A carving of a big dragon with a scaled, snake-like body curves across the sides of this cylinder-shaped ornament. The creature’s snout is near the top of the cylinder. At the end of each of its four legs are five clawed toes. All around the dragon are small swirling clouds. There are seven layers of clouds from top to bottom.
