Buddha
(India, Nepal, and Tibet)
This sculpture preserves important characteristics associated with the Buddha. According to Buddhist texts he had 32 special physical characteristics. On this sculpture, these include the elongated earlobes but lack of earrings or other jewelry, which Shakyamuni gave up with his princely life, ushnisha (the protrusion on his head), and urna (the mark between his eyebrows). Gandharan sculpture is characterized by features like the crisp folds of this figure’s robes, his wavy hair, small mouth, and eyes recalling the shape of a lotus petal.
