Portrait of a Middle-Aged Woman (possibly Lady De Clifford)
This portrait was listed in catalogues of the Walters Art Museum (then Walters Art Gallery) as "Mrs Frere" in 1909, 1922, and 1929. No woman of that name appears in the early 20th-century catalog of Romney's work. Perhaps the closest match to a painting described in that volume is a portait of Dowager Lady de Clifford (1745-1828, born Sophia Campbell). She was governess to Princess Charlotte while a widow.
