Ham on a Table

Léon Bonvin (French, 1834-1866) (Artist)
ca. 1850-1855
charcoal on paper

This kitchen table scene relates to a group of still lifes with food in the Walters collection, but also differs in significant ways, beyond the obvious variation in scale and medium. Here the viewer looks down onto the table from a higher vantage point, and the staging of the food is simpler: a single type of food is presented on a plate. In Bonvin’s other kitchen still lifes we see a selection of items, nuts, grapes, oranges, or a pie, often with glassware, napkins, silverware or cruets.
