Oval Amulet Pin
This is an example of an amulet, perhaps from the Middle East and possibly datable to the 8th-9th century, that would have been pinned to the owner's clothing. In Islam, amulets are thought to bear baraka, or blessings, bestowed by God. Amulets can be worn on the body to protect against ailments and other types of danger and to manifest well-being and success. While amulets can take many forms and be fashioned out of different materials, objects with baraka often have inscriptions related to God and the Prophet Muhammad, or excerpts from the Qurʾan, believed to be the literal word of God.
