Covered mangosteen-shaped box
19th-20th century
Silver, niello, enamel, gilding
This box was a likely part of an elaborate set that would have included a framework to hold several small boxes and bowls in which the nuts, leaves, areca nut bark, and powdered lime were stored, and a set of betel nut cutters. This box is in the shape of a sweet, tropical fruit known as a mangosteen.
