Short Sword (wakizashi) with Enma and Daruma
This short sword is decorated with two important figures in Buddhism: Enma and Daruma. Enma, the Buddhist King of Hell, is depicted on the scabbard (sheath)—he is the figure with the red face and seated behind a desk. Upon death, a man’s soul faces judgment by Enma.
Daruma, credited as the founder of Zen Buddhism in Japan, is depicted on the sword handle, in a scene of a famous incident from his life, when he miraculously crossed China’s Yangzi River while balanced on a tiny reed.
